Pantanal River Cruise
Jaguars, caimans and giant storks in the world’s largest tropical wetland.
Get Free South America River Cruise QuotesA Pantanal river cruise is the best chance anywhere to see wild jaguars — and it happens from a small boat on a quiet river in the middle of the world’s largest tropical wetland.
What and Where the Pantanal Is
The Pantanal is a vast seasonal floodplain, mostly in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, extending into Bolivia and Paraguay. Each wet season the rivers spill over and flood much of it; as the water recedes, fish, birds and the animals that hunt them concentrate along the remaining channels. That is what makes boat-based wildlife watching here so rewarding.
What you may see
- Jaguars on riverbanks, especially around Porto Jofre
- Yacare caimans in large numbers
- Capybaras, giant otters and marsh deer
- Jabiru storks, hyacinth macaws, herons and kingfishers

How Pantanal Boat Trips Work
| Style | Base | What it is like |
|---|---|---|
| Jaguar boat safaris | Lodges and a hotel at Porto Jofre, northern Pantanal | Fast small boats explore the Cuiaba River and side channels; you return to land each night |
| Multi-night river trips | Small vessels or boat hotels on the Paraguay River (Caceres, Corumba) | You sleep on board; speedboats go out from the mother ship |
| Lodge stays with boat trips | Fazendas (ranches) across the region | A mix of boat outings, walks, horseback riding and drives |
Most jaguar-focused itineraries combine two or three of these. Getting to Porto Jofre means a long drive down the unpaved Transpantaneira from Pocone, itself a wildlife drive. Standards vary a lot between operators, so this is a region where advice from someone who knows the properties makes a difference.

Pantanal Questions
What is a Pantanal river cruise?
There are two kinds. The most common is a day of boat safaris from Porto Jofre, at the end of the Transpantaneira road, along the Cuiaba River and its side channels, where jaguars hunt along the banks. The other is a multi-night trip aboard a small vessel or boat hotel on the Paraguay River and its tributaries, between towns such as Caceres and Corumba.
When is the best time to see jaguars?
The dry season, roughly July to October, when water levels drop and wildlife gathers along the rivers. Many jaguar trips run from about June to November. Sightings are frequent in season, but no operator can guarantee one.
Can I combine the Pantanal with the Amazon?
Yes. Cuiaba, the main Pantanal gateway, has flights to Manaus and to other Brazilian hubs, so a week in each region fits into one trip.
